“Cold Snap” is the lead-in for this particular episode and serves as a backstory for the problem the episode presents. Told through a letter written by clone trooper Shiv, we find out how much it stinks to be assigned to cold planet Orto Plutonia. Especially when their own versions of the Abominable Snowmen start taking out troopers. More about them in the episode. BTW, the clones make a Grievous snowman for target practice. Nice touch. After the Sasquatches take out Shiv and his commander, we get a haunting set of panels as their temporary camp gets covered in the falling snow.
I remember some fans thinking this episode came before the movie because it only features Anakin and Obi-Wan without Ahsoka. She is, however, a Padawan, so one would expect her to study at the Temple from time to time.
Cookie: “Arrogance diminishes wisdom.” Though broadly and in the long term you could obviously pertain that to Anakin, in this particular case, it has to be applied to Chairman Chi Cho.
That frozen trooper helmet is kind of cool.
I forgot that Threepio and Artoo were in this episode.
Senator Chuchi! Another Jennifer Hale role, and a rather cute design, IMO. You know, for a CGI creation.
The base at the beginning definitely calls back elements of Echo Base.
Anakin channeling the Fonz and his percussive maintenance.
Yeah, Cho’s pretty much a jerk throughout.
The landscape shots in this one are pretty nice. In the commentary, Filoni notes that they based much of it on Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for Hoth. Thanks to that you get a much "darker" frozen planet than Hoth was.
There might be an EU contradiction having to do with the Talz, but I don’t know what it is.
Wow, no witty comeback from Obi-Wan. He just tells Anakin to shut up. And it’s still funny.
Aww, Obi-Wan gets a Talz hug. How sweet.
The Talz chief goes by the nickname “Son of Suns”. Perhaps a Take That at the prophecy of the Chosen One?
Gotta feel bad for the clones who have to ride the open air bikes.
Rex sideswipes a Talz on his speeder bike. And it’s fantastic.
Chuchi’s arc in this episode is much about her gaining the confidence and taking the initiative. One wonders how often she let her home planet take the lead in her career as a senator before. OTOH, maybe she’s fairly recently elected. She seems pretty young.
Chairman Cho, defiant to the end. Never found his wisdom, only his arrogance.
Peace is established and the snow storm lets up. Oh, symbolism.
Anakin quoting himself in the future: “Most impressive”.
Chuchi definitely establishes herself by the end there. Though I don’t think Obi-Wan’s “end all wars” sentiment will be very successful. He doesn’t know it, but he’s on a show called Star Wars. In fact, this particular series has the word in it twice.
