Cookie: "The first step toward loyalty is trust." A lesson that Krell could care to learn. If he cared to. Which he wouldn't.
I feel bad when the gunships get blown out of the sky. And they always explode in such a way that they're engulfed. We never see them take a minor engine hit and have to make a hard landing (unless there's a major character in them). Otherwise, all those clones and Jedi, snuffed out instantly.
I'm still not sure why Umbarans have pressurized suits on their home planet, where the Jedi and clones have no trouble breathing. Maybe they're being pumped with stimulants or other drugs or something.
The Umbarans do have some unique vehicle designs which are pretty cool.
I feel like there's a lot in the first three episodes that could have been compressed into two. That said, this opening showing how well the 501st operates under Anakin's command provides a nice contrast to Krell's.
At least that consumed clone doesn't suffer long. Boom.
"Back in the day". I wonder if that means the war's been going on for a couple of years at this point. That would be a lot of time for Rex. Though I also don't know if they've established how long the Clone Wars lasts in the new timeline yet. They could have it go as long as they want now, which I would like since that would make Vader and Obi-Wan older by the time of ANH.
I probably get more Vietnam vibes from this arc than any other point in the saga. That Y-wing bombing run is a prime example.
Enter Krell. A large part of me wishes that it turns out Krell is just kind of an a-hole who doesn't care all that much about clones, setting him very apart from most Jedi. Given the thousands of Jedi in the galaxy, you figure there have to be a few with some unevolved viewpoints. People probably wouldn't have liked that, though.
Still, in my headcanon, Krell started the war more compassionate, but gradually became more and more willing to sacrifice his troops for victory as the war dragged on until, finally, he fell to the dark side.
Proto-Z-95 Headhunters! Woohoo!
This is the first time in the rewatch where I really notice how far the animation has come since the series began. It looks great.
I love how as the clones are marching on the main road, the camera will make small moves, like it's glancing around at the surrounding jungle. As a result, we the audience are also looking for enemies hiding in the trees, ramping up the tension.
Umbara's planet design looks like a level in Halo. I'm half expecting the Flood to leap out of the mists.
They pull a little bit of a fast one on us at the end of this episode. As Fives indicates, Rex and Krell almost come to an understanding by the hour's end. In a traditional story, they would have probably had to work together in subsequent episodes, ending with mutual respect for each other. But this isn't that kind of story.
And we end on a chaotic battle, setting the stage for the episodes to come.
Next: Rex and co. try to survive their increasingly difficult orders from "The General"!
